Suzanne Dennis

December Artist of the Month

Suzanne has always had a passion for art. She grew up on a farm in the Lockyer Valley where the wide open spaces and lush surroundings influenced her creativity. She studied art at school at which she excelled. She continued making art while working in her chosen profession and won prizes in many competitions and shows that she entered during this period. In the late 1980s she established her own very successful business as a fabric artist creating and designing one-off hand painted garments. Following this she completed a visual arts degree at the Queensland University of Technology. This was an exciting time as she was able to immerse herself in her art studying fibre art, ceramics, photography, painting and art history. On completing her degree life’s circumstances saw her returning to the workforce and once again her creativity was put on hold. After a break she then enrolled at the Brisbane Institute of Art and formed a group with likeminded artists called 10 Plus One. This group worked together and held exhibitions at BIA in which Suzanne exhibited and sold her work. For the next 10 years she did very little creative work as her working life took priority. Fast forward to 2020, a move to Bribie Island and retirement it was time to get her creative spirit working again. Suzanne loves to make images that sing to the soul. She has a passion for still life and turning ordinary mundane objects into something extra ordinary. Her paintings are loaded with autobiographical content using her household objects that she has made and collected over the years and turning them into her lived experiences.

Meet Suzanne over morning tea here on Friday 10 December 2021. Please RSVP on 3408 9288 as spaces are limited.

The Artist of the Month, whose works are displayed on a feature wall of the Centre Gift Shop, can be from near or far. Many are local Bribie artists who have shone in their medium or are taking an opportunity to display a new one. Some artists are from surrounding areas, and others come from further afield to have their work seen and admired by a new audience.

The Artist of the Month is not only a talking point at the Centre, it also showcases works and practices to stimulate and inspire artists and visitors alike.

If you would like to inquire about being Artist of the Month, please contact Sue Davey at the Centre on 07 3408 9288.

You can download the application form.

Morning tea is held here on the SECOND Friday of the month, at 10.30am, at which the Artist of the Month speaks about his or her work. This event also serves as a welcome to new members and a chance for other members and friends to meet and mingle.
