CORAL REEF
Judge's comments: “CORAL REEF” is distinctive and strikingly beautiful. By angling the horizon
line, the sense of depth in the surrounding ocean is uncertain but coyly so. Pieces of seaweed
accentuate the sense of endlessness thanks to well placed blues over-top. All the while the soothing
seagrass, vibrant and swaying, is pushed to the forefront. By its side, red rock and coral steal the
show whilst bringing the piece together by reflecting the colours drifting in the sea’s space. Each
shade and tint contrast enough to feel unique but still working in tandem to give the idea of cool,
crisp harmony. Proudly displaying each brush stroke provides the sensation this artwork captures
the ocean mid-motion. Occasionally painting in an opposing direction to further the sense and break
uniformity. The artist displays a sophisticated grasp of colour theory and action in every stroke.
Their work is powerful and perfectly encapsulates the beauty of a coral bed.

DON'T BAIL ON THE WHALE
Media category: 3D single medium
Winner number:
Title of work: DON’T BAIL ON THE WHALE
Judge's comments: “DON’T BAIL ON THE WHALE” is immediately enchanting, drawing the eye with simplicity and style. Utilising a pair of bold and contrasting colours, skillfully affixed to their respective spaces, draws the shape of the whale and it’s ocean with grace. The blocking is only
broken by the creature’s wise, blue eye, which works to bring the viewer straight to the focal point
of the piece. This is an expert usage of colour and collage alike. Taking in the work further brings the viewer to the ever expansive ocean, creeping off the canvas as if overflowing. Simple splatters of paint provide a brilliant sense of motion amongst the bottle cap waves. The artist makes clever
use of recycled goods to enhance the environmental sentiments behind their work. Each fraying
rope and salvaged newspaper clipping reminds the audience of ocean life losing their home to pollution. A truly moving and thoughtful artwork.
Special Mention from Judge of Recycling Award;
While there is an emphasis in repeated round forms, there is a thoughtful use of other materials.
An effective statement linking thoughtless plastic disposal and threat to species.

#PENINSULA LIFE
diptych,
Judge's comments: “#PENINSULA LIFE” evokes a serene sense of nostalgia and longing. One can
almost smell the salty, seaside breeze when admiring each carefully placed shell decorating the
wooden board - the timber itself reminiscent of driftwood. Every element pulls fond memories of
summer from the viewer, especially the gentle sandscape where two, sweet turtle imprints rest.
Completing the piece with polaroids certainly makes it worthy of a hashtag, but notably adds
imagery that speaks of joy when taking in the local environment. Just a moment spent admiring this
artist’s hard work conjures a beach beneath one’s feet and a sigh of awe. This is a deeply beautiful
love letter to life in Moreton Bay.

“A MESSED UP WORLD” provides a wonderful, thought-provoking
perspective during these ever-changing times. With the ups and downs of the last few years, a
land-loving octopus and permanently purple skies feel as possible as anything else the world has
recently encountered. Yet there’s a delightful light-heartedness to how the world has changed in
their vision. Mischievous witches, sky-bound oceans, watchful eyes from the top of a cliffside,
every detail prompts the viewer to imagine what else might come to exist with a warm curiosity.
Creativity is surely endless in this artist’s mind, with something new to discover the longer you
spend observing this masterpiece. The hard-work put into conjuring their otherworldly art was well worth it.

The work shows a developing of fundamental skills in drawing and observation,
while displaying the confidence to "vandalize" and push the piece beyond a single medium portrait (pencil drawing). The piece's use of motifs -to reach for a more complete portrait of the artist- shows a search for greater forms self-expression.

GALAXY,
As the only entrant into the mixed media category, the work shows a brave experimentation into other form and art styles. Not only being different in the use of material, but also being the only entrant across any category in this age group to use a completely abstract technique. The work uses a pleasing mix of colours, with dark areas of contrast that make those bright colours pop.
I would encourage the artist to continue on with these experiments and techniques which I believe would lead to some brilliant work of art in the future.

TURTLE NECK TIM
This piece shows a great use of technique, creating a delicate and refined original character with multiple glazes, surfaces, and textures being used across the model.
The character feels like it has its own playful personality, with it's cute cat-like features. But could also possibly transform into something frightening? with it's alien tentacles (what's hiding under that turtleneck!?!)

DRAGONS' DEN'
This piece shows a dedicated attention to detail, and finely tuned drawing ability. Depicting multiple characters and stories from across the fantasy genre, ranging widely in scale and personality.
Looking at this piece each viewer could have a different experience, relating themselves either to the smaller characters in the story being towered over by the dragons, or the viewer themselves towering above as the even larger more powerful dragon in the room.
This piece is a great achievement for the artist and is highly commended for the effort and skill that was put in to produce it.

JUST JOEY
The combined use of soft colours, warm grey tones and lack of hard edges beautifully match and blend the main subject of the piece into the background setting.
The piece is confidently painted, producing textures that perfectly suit the subject.
Which -as anyone who's patted a kangaroo before can confirm- is fur, that is both soft and rough at the same time.

STITCHED UP
This piece has a simple but powerful expression,
depicting emotions with metaphors that could be interpreted as being
silenced, having no voice, or being enslaved. The piece also combines the idea of 'sport' as part of the story as it is the same stitching use on the ball as on the character's lips. Bringing up the idea that the character themselves feels like the ball in some bigger game?
The work also shows a good display of skill and refinement, with the use of different glazes and materials.

'The Other Side'
This artwork is a beautiful take on the ancient concept of the yin and yang, the 'light and dark' with each -good and evil- having within it a small piece of the other.
The work also shows a deep level of consideration for the subject matter, as it appears to take inspiration from the unusual depictions of angels in the Book of Ezekiel. While these descriptions have often been labeled as 'cosmic horror', this piece presents those concepts in a soft and peaceful way.
This piece is highly commended as is shows a high level of skill and unique style in the digital medium.
